Double-Stack Container Rail Transportation

Double-stack intermodal container transport is where shipping containers are stacked two cars high on trains. This started in the U.S. in the 1980s. It is considered a major development because there is now the capacity to haul twice as much freight in one trip. This mode of shipping is used in other parts of the world including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, China, Saudi Arabia, and India. In 1990, the United States Department of Transportation issued a report on the use of double stack container systems. I have included a link to the resource below.
