Sea - Air Intermodal Transportation

Sea-air intermodal transport is when freight is transported by sea for the first leg of its journey and by air for the second leg of its journey. This saves money and time. This type of transport saves time because a journey by sea takes a long time, but when some of the travel is made by air it shortens the trip. Sea-air transport saves money because transport by air alone is expensive, but transport by sea is not. When the two are combined it saves money and time. 

Some of the challenges are that goods that travel by this method of intermodal transport must meet the regulatory standards of both modes of transport. Some traveling by air may be considered dangerous while it may not be if traveling by sea, or vice versa. This method does benefit from containerization because you cannot load an entire container onto an aircraft. At least not yet! One of the advantages of air transport is that it creates the opportunities of limitless routes. To improve this type of transport would require uniform regulations and more innovative aircrafts that could accommodate more freight.
